While the narrative accurately covers the basics of Grant’s biography and especially his Civil War battles, in other ways the text of U. S. Grant Album: a Pictorial Biography of Ulysses S. Grant From Leather Clerk to the White House by Lawrence A. Frost has not aged well since this book came out in 1966.
With little mention of slavery or Grant’s attitude towards it, and nothing about Grant’s role putting down redeemers who took over southern states at the end of Reconstruction, including Grant’s battle against the KKK, this is a book about America’s first civil rights president that doesn’t talk about civil rights.
But used copies abound online, and if you can get one cheap, it’s worthwhile for the numerous great photos and illustrations not only of Grant and his family but also of figures important in Grant’s life and career.
